Winslow's First Camping Adventure: Day 7

Winslow was excited. Today he was going to a place he'd never been before...
.....and neither had anyone else in the family!
Tucked inside his furby seat, he was ready to set off.
Winslow loved the views of the mountains along the way.
Once we got there he thought he'd found the path, but he thought he'd check the map first...
...good thing he did----that was NOT the way (the tire tracks end at a cliff)
Winslow lesson #1 for the day: Always check maps...much safer that way....
So now on the right road, we followed the trail...
...to Kunjamuk Cave!
It is a dug out cave of mystery...
No one knows who built it and for what purpose.
Some think it was for a mine, but given its dimensions it seems unlikely.
It looks like it was part natural, part hewn. Probably it was used as a temporary shelter and/or supply cache for when the Haudenosaunee and other nations went hunting in the mountains. The mountains were considered sacred so only hunting parties went up there temporarily. It has an opening from above one could use as a smoke vent and a source of light.

The ceiling is quite high.
Winslow and the girl thought it would be a great place to have a play fort
and play "Sugar Creek Gang" (You'll have to read the novels to understand).
The cave is about 8 ft wide and 15 ft deep.
Winslow liked the natural light in the cave and the natural coolness after a hot hike.
Winslow lesson #2-Always check a cave for wildlife...no matter how small!
He wasn't too sure of the cave spiders, however, and was glad to go home.
After the supper the girls and Winslow played in their new improved teepee.
And listened to the further adventures of Betsy and Tacy....
Winslow liked the rocks that Thea brought him and Shaniah arranged for him.
He just hoped no one would light a campfire under him ;-)
All that was left to do for the day was ....eat ice cream!
Winslow Lesson #3- Life's too short...Eat the Ice Cream, Ask Questions Later!
Winslow says, "I am Winslow and I approve of this sundae!"
